Fumed Silica in Colloidal Battery

The gelling agent of colloidal battery is fumed silica.Fumed silica is a high purity white odourless nano-powder material with thickening, anti-caking, controlling system rheology and thixotropy.

Geseesil A-200 is a nano-sized white powder produced by high temperature hydrolysis of silicon halides in a hydroxide flame, which is an amorphous white ultrafine particle. The structural form of its primary particles is Si-O-Si, which is spherical. Its surface hydroxyl group [-OH] interacts with each other to form chain-like secondary particles. Secondary particles due to mutual adhesion and agglomeration into a sparse state, which is used in the production of glue gas-phase SiO2 commodities. The activity of fumed SiO2 is shown in its ‘thickening’ and ‘thixotropic’ properties. The reason for thickening is that the silanol group between the particles combines with the hydrogen bond to become a three-dimensional structure polymer to increase the viscosity of the medium. On the contrary, when there is an external force (shear force, electric field force, etc.), the three-dimensional structure will be destroyed, and the medium becomes thinner. Once the external force disappears, the three-dimensional structure will slowly recover. This is the thixotropy of the medium, and is reversible.

Geseesil A-200 is used in colloidal batteries for its excellent thickening and thixotropic properties. The colloidal electrolyte is made of fumed silica and a certain concentration of sulfuric acid solution in a certain proportion, the sulfuric acid and water in this electrolyte are ‘stored’ in the silica gel network, which is a ‘soft solid gel’, and appears solid when it is stationary. When the battery is charged, due to the increase in the concentration of sulfuric acid in the electrolyte so that the ‘thickening’ and accompanied by the creation of fissures, charging the late ‘electrolysis of water’ reaction so that the positive electrode produced by the oxygen through the countless fissures by the negative electrode is absorbed, and further reduced to water, thereby Realise the sealed cycle reaction of the battery. When discharging, the concentration of sulphuric acid in the electrolyte decreases to make it ‘dilute’, and it becomes the dilute gel state before filling the battery. Therefore, the colloidal battery has the function of ‘maintenance-free’.
